The Snorkel 1958

Starring: Peter Van Eyck

A man murders his wife and is given away by his observant young stepdaughter.

A decent thriller where you know what has happened right from the opening reel. Van Eyck doesn't speak for the first 20 minutes and the movie is better for that as his acting really let this thriller down. Interesting idea, neatly tidied up, although I personally would have altered the very end.    8/10

The Bargee 1964

 Starring: Harry H Corbett

A canal barge Casanova is trapped into marriage.

Summer vibes with a stellar British comedy cast. Unfortunately, as watchable as this was, they just didn't gel. I never understood the appeal of Corbett with his silly voice. I very much enjoyed seeing Ronnie Barker, Eric Sykes and Derek Nimmo. Glad I watched this, brought back many memories.  6/10

St Martin's Lane 1938

 Starring: Charles Laughton

A middle-aged busker falls in love with a brilliant girl dancer who becomes a start.

What a cast, I found Laughton to be too much, Rex Harrison oozed class and Vivien Leigh was a pretty delight. London as you will never see it again.     6/10

The Lost Continent 1968

Starring: Eric Porter

The captain of a tramp steamer illegally carries dynamite, and he and his passengers are stranded in a weird Saragasso Sea colony run by the Spanish Inquisition.

Falls into the so bad it is goos category. Poor script, dreadful acting and gruesome death scenes just to shock. The effects and creatures met are hilarious.   5/10

The Rage Of Paris 1938

Starring: Danielle Darrieux

Confidence tricksters invest their money in a French girl who I out to nail a millionaire.

This started off so well, really enjoyed the first ten minute. Unfortunately, it then descended into a noisy racket with everyone talking over each other at a million miles an hour. Shame. 4/10

Dark Tide 2012

Starring: Halle Barry

A professional diver tutor returns to deep waters after 1 year, following an almost fatal encounter with a great white shark. The nightmare from the deep is still lurking - more carnivorous and hungry than ever.

Labelled a high octane thriller, it is anything but. Location and look are amazing with some great nature shots. The script unfortunately is dire and it is very poorly acted. No excitement at all.    4/10

Carolina 1934

Starring: Janet Gaynor

A Yankee farmer's daughter falls in love with a Southern plantation owner.

Very, very dated. Historically interested both in the movie itself and subject matter but barely watchable in modern times.     4/10

Escape In The Fog 1945

Starring: Nina Foch

A nurse sees a man attacked in a dream, and helps to save him when the events recur in real life.

Fag fog aside, this was a decent spy thriller that. moved along at a good lick with decent tension. Enjoyable start to 2025 despite a fairly lame ending.       8/10

Black Christmas 1974

Starring: Olivia Hussey

Girls in a college sorority house are attacked by a lurking psychopath.

One of the trail-breaking movies that brought about the 'slasher' genre. I personally just do not see the attraction in watching people brutally murdered. Poor script, not very well acted and I was quite frankly bored by it.  2/10

Take One False Step 1949

Starring: William Powell

An innocent middle-aged man who has befriended a girl is hunted by the police when she is murdered.

Really rather dull to start with, movie picks up once William Powell is bitten by the dog and it becomes a lot more watchable.    4/10

Westward The Women 1951

Starring: Robert Taylor

In the 1850's an Indian scout leads 150 Chicago women to meet husbands in California

Quite a lengthy movie and yet this helped with the premise of an epic voyage. Highly unusual as a western and I enjoyed it for that. Must have been a real mission to film this with the amount of locations and characters.   6/10

The Undying Monster 1943

Starring: James Ellison

A curse hangs over the English ancestral home of the Hammonds.

As 1940's horror movies go, I didn't mind this. The lead actress had real energy, the lighting, music and location were excellent. End scene was hilarious but at just over an hour, this was enjoyable.     6/10

Harriet Craig 1950

Starring: Joan Crawford

A wife's only real love is her meticulously kept and richly appointed house.

I have never considered Joan Crawford to be an attractive woman. However, both her and co-lead Wendell Corey give a wonderful performance in this tense melodrama. Brilliant acting throughout in a simple but excellent script.   8/10

Belle Of The Yukon 1945

Starring: Gypsy Rose Lee

A troupe of saloon entertainers in the Yukon become involved with a bank robbery.

Randolph Scott was prolific, he seems to be in every other movie I watch. This is one of the most lavish films I have seen for a long time, so colourful with amazing costumes. Once you cut through the glamorous surface, it is all a little underwhelming.      5/10

Meet The Stewarts 1942

Starring: William Holden

Newleyweds have trouble when he's poor and she's used to rich living.

Young couple having marriage dilemmas, from a different generation and therefore very dated now. However, the two leads have an excellent connection and a certain charm.    6/10

Vicki 1953

Starring: Jeanne Crain

A girl model is murdered, and her sister proves that her boyfriend is innocent, despite the efforts of a brutal detective.

Seen this type of movie a hundred times before, nothing new brought to the table and music grated on your nerves.    3/10

The Young In Heart 1938

Starring: Douglas Fairbanks Jr.

A family of charming confidence tricksters move in on a rich old lady but she brings out the best in them.

Delightful in parts, finishes nicely, is this one of the first occasions a fast sports car appears in a movie?  5/10

One Touch Of Venus 1948

Starring: Ava Gardner

In a fashionable department store, a statue of Venus comes to life and falls for a window dresser.

I guess this is where the film Mannequin got its inspiration. Ava Gardner was seductive and Molly stole the show as the wise-cracking secretary. Considering it is a movie, nobody sang a word for over 30 minutes. Very light hearted and easy to watch.   7/10

Transit 2012

Starring: Jim Caviezel

A gang of bank robbers hide their loot in the car of a family going camping. They chase down the family to kill them and get the loot back, but run into a fight.

A bunch of people consistently making baffling stupid decisions. It keeps you watching, but the script shows a lack of originality and people seem to get shot in the chest three times and stand up as if nothing has happened. Some good action and really rather violent at times. Not good in so many ways and yet I kind of enjoyed it.     6/10

Battle Taxi 1954

 Starring: Sterling Hayden

A newcomer to the helicopter rescue service in Korea resents his non-combatant status, but becomes a hero.

Who doesn't love a helicopter, enjoyed a war film focussing on these machines. Not too long and an interesting watch.     6/10
